COVID-19: Pastor Kumuyi writes letter to Deeper Life members across Nigeria

I just stumbled on a letter written from the national headquarters of Deeper Christian Life Ministry. It was signed by national secretary of the church, Pastor SM Afuwape and addressed to leaders of the church in Nigeria. The content is directing leaders of the church, the state overseers and region overseers across Nigeria to provide food for their members. The letter said this is necessary at this critical time of the coronavirus pandemic where the church members are no longer going to work.

This is commendable from Pastor William Kumuyi, the general superintendent of the church. A few days back, report came that Pastor Kumuyi donated N50million to support the federal government in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. And now he has directed all the regions in the nation to get palliatives for their members. There are so many regions in different states.

This is actually great news. The people will be happy to receive such a message from the general superintendent of the church. People have been blaming churches for not giving food to their members. To them the churches do not care for their members. This has proven them very wrong. Churches take care of their people because that is one of their major responsibilities on earth.

In most of the regions, there are poor people in them. This is especially so in the villages and even some in the cities across the states. There are some people even in the cities who struggle to survive. They struggle to feed their children and still come to church. This is not only peculiar to Deeper Life church but in all the denominations in Nigeria. So, helping the members with food this time is a welcome development.

The lockdown started towards the end of March and expected to end in two weeks. The government was of the view that the coronavirus would be contained at this time but with the state of things the government is seeing that the virus has not been contained so there is need to extend the lockdown so as to avoid community spread. State governors are following the pattern of the federal government and they have also extended lockdown in their different states.

Some have provided food items to their people but the problem now is that how many persons will the food get to in a state of more than four million people like Delta state. Moreover, most of the people sharing the food are politicians who do things along political lines. If you are not a member of their party, you cannot benefit from their party programmes. Anyway, people are ready to cope all in a bid to push the coronavirus back to where it was imported to Nigeria or banished.
